One of hte best used and new bookstores in the San Francisco Bay Area. Has a great selection of cheap used books, over 50,000 plus in their warehouse, some pretty rare (and expensive) one's too.

"On behalf of the 56,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, I am writing to demand that the Canadian government condemn the military assault on the people of Gaza that the state of Israel commenced on December 26th, 2008."

"An early draft of the script even had names misspelled and referenced Chinese surnames, a sloppy mistake that was easily corrected, but what remained unchanged was the confusion of Asian customs. For the record, Hmong people do not use favors as a method of atonement nor do they endlessly shower individuals with gifts out of gratitude.
These may be minor mistakes made for the sake of storytelling, but they do raise the question of why Schenk would use the Hmong in his script if he did not want to accurately research and portray them in his movie."

"Gran Torino asks the question: who is the real racist – the working-class white dude who tosses slurs around but actually interacts – sometimes friendly, sometimes bitterly – with these communities? Or the bourgeois white dude who has learned not to use these words but never has into interact with communities of color? Perhaps both are racist, but at least one is honest about it."

Juan Cole blogs how Ali Khamenei is clashing with president Ahmadinejad in Iran and is keeping suicide bombers within Iran and restraining the reactions of Hezbollah; how true this is, to me, is unkown, as some have argued Hezbollah is more independent from Iran than we think. Cole adds:
"This restraint, however, depends on Israel not directly attacking Iran. William Lind argues that if Binyamin Netanyahu of the Likud Party gets elected on Feb. 10, he may well bomb Iran. In that case, Lind says, Iran might well have the tools to cut the US military off from its supplies that come up from the Persian Gulf through the Shiite south of Iraq, allowing it to be effectively killed."

"It didn’t really matter who won the top spot, just as long as the Left didn’t self-destruct and hand the Board Presidency to the Mayor’s allies. As the Board looks ahead to upcoming fights (including a June special election over the budget), progressives managed to survive another personality death match – giving us hope for 2009."

"The age of satelite television channels is a challenge and an opportunity for the use of psychological war by the enemy.

"You know, I haven’t said much about this shooting other than it happened, it sickens me, and here’s what you can do about it, but this has really been upsetting the hell out me. I don’t give a shit if the cop quit his job. You don’t get to execute someone and just find yourself on the job market again. And I really don’t care if it was an accident or not. There was absolutely no need for him to pull out a gun, or anything else other than handcuffs, when Grant was obviously not going anywhere."
-
"I would have liked to see more focus on the damage and criminal acts of the oil companies. The attempts at non-biased reporting doesnt really work, though the head of Shell Basil Omiyi couldn’t hide his disdain for local communities even trying to blame them for the Shell’s failure to clean up their oil spills in Ogoniland."
-
"The New York City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to require the Police Department to file annual reports about the use of deadly force by officers, including the race, gender and age of the people who were shot."
-
"Once it gets too hot for the UN on the ground, they just FLEE the scene. While Gaza had been suffering for quiet a long time from blockades, patients dying due to lack of medical supplies, and day-to-day picking lottery winners randomly of its winners, the UN realized that it is too dangerous for it to remain there, instead to broadcast world wide the attoricities of the Israeli Defense Forces, hence they simply request for immediate seize fire from both sides, which places Hamas to the level of Mr. Olmert, whose war machinary had devastated the lives of thousands of people in less than two weeks."
